Red Wine Lice Gaglioppo Caparra & Siciliani

Lice is a revolutionary wine for Calabrian viticulture, which proudly expresses the gentle and elegant soul of pure Gaglioppo. Gaglioppo is an iconic vine of Calabria, which has some peculiarities: strong resistance to heat, pale color, medium structure, citrus aromas and scratchy tannin. Too often, to create more structured wines, Gaglioppo has been cut with international vines, inexorably losing its distinctive traits.

Lice is the result of a long study that Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini, Oenologist of Caparra e Siciliani, has carried out on pure Gaglioppo: tests of different types of vinification and refinement have led to a deep knowledge of the vine and its needs.

The grapes used for Lice come from vineyards in the Cirò area, with 30-year-old vines, clay-sandy soil and low yields. Lice ferments in rough cement tanks, in contact with the skins; mechanical extractions are very delicate, followed by a long maceration on the marc. Only the first-pressed wine is recovered at the time of racking and decanted in steel for 3 months. The refinement takes place in French oak barriques with different types of toasting to soften the tannin and enhance the fruit, without the wood overpowering the aromatic bouquet. Before bottling, the wine remains in cement for a few months to blend and find its balance.
